As the name says, Narayan Ashram is a spiritual place with a well structured architecture, located in the lap of Himalayas. It is surrounded by thick forests and green shade with mesmerizing scenic beauty and soul refreshing serenity combined. The ashram was established in 1936 by an engineer turned swami, Sri Narayan Swami, who belonged from Mysore. It is situated near Dharchula in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand at a height of 2750 mt. above sea level. The Ashram is a spiritual cum socio-educational center where various social – spiritual activities for the members are conducted on a regular basis. This ashram act as a oasis for pilgrims on their pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar, in fact, before 1962 Indo – China war it was used to serve as a resting place for pilgrims on their pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar.
The Ashram has one main building that houses Lord Survya Narayan Statue along with Swami Ji’s portrait. Ashram also comprises of a big kitchen where they cook food grown on their own fields organically, a dormitory and a meditation center. The Ashram can accommodate about 50 people at a time, and it has a greenhouse too.The Narayan Ashram has its own library that has books, old scriptures and writings.
Generally local people use local dialect i.e Kumaouni, Bhotia, Nepali and Hindi and English is used by urban people.
The climate is warm and temperate. The average temperature of the year is 12.5 degree celsius.The place gets an average rainfall of 1298 mm per year, that means in monsoon season it rains quite a lot. And in winters it receives a regular snowfall from December to February.
Best time to visit:
The place cant be visited all year round because of harsh weather conditions during monsoon and winters.
How to Reach Narayan Ashram:
Nearest airport is Pithoragarh which is around 125 km away. One can easily hire taxis available at the airport. This airport is well connected with other major airports and receives regular flights from Delhi and Dehradun.
Pantnagar is the second nearest airport which is around 350 km away, from here also one can hire taxis to reach Narayan Ashram.
Nearest railway station:
There are two routes through which you can reach Narayan Ashram. The first is Tanakpur – Pithoragarh route. Tanakpur railway station is 260 km away. Second is Haldwani – Almora route, Haldwani (Kathgodam) railway station is 290 km away from the ashram.
